UrbanSOS
The system is a triad of self-supporting tensegrity towers—a structural system based on the use of rigid compression members connected through a network of steel cables in tension. In such a system, the compression members do not touch one another and the prestressed tensioned cables define the system spatially. The placements of the structures allow individuals to freely circulate around each respective tower, experiencing the layering of materials and video projection from different vantage points.
The self-supporting nature of the tensegrity towers introduced a unique design and fabrication challenge. The formal quality of the sculptures along with an intelligent use of materials required the collaboration and expertise of various designers—this integrated design approach is one which defines the success and spirit of the Urban SOS program.
