Amphorae
Amphorae was a project involving a collaboration with the French concrete company LaFarge and their subsidiary Ductal, experimenting with their new high-performance fiber-reinforced concrete with exceptional mechanical performance (200 MPa compression and 40 MPa tension). We decided to use this technology to our advantage in the development of a number of systems and shapes with thin walls and bearing-points requiring the performance characteristics of the advanced material. We developed a solid parametric computer model using CATIA, CNC fabricated rigid formwork skeletons out of medium density fiberboard in order to support CNC fabricated urethane inner reusable molds, and cast repetitive Ductal elements to build three installations of various shapes, configurations and performance characteristics.
